It All Started Back in 1908...
The illustrious organization of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 15, 1908, in Minor Hall on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Alpha Kappa Alpha, led by our guiding light, Ethel Hedgeman-Lyle, was created by a group of goal oriented and purpose-driven women. These women had a dream to create an uplifting, educational and social environment in which African American women could flourish in during these segregated times.
Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first established black Greek-lettered sorority. Since 1908, our organziation has grown tremendously, with more than 355,000 women initiated into our sorority and constituting 1,061 chapters in all 50 states and across 11 nations.
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to ALL mankind.
